Ahmet Misbah Demircan, the Mayor of Beyoğlu – a municipality in greater Istanbul – painted wooden toys with his daughter, Erbe, last month at a father-child playgroup event to launch a new project supported by the Bernard van Leer Foundation.

In an interview with a newspaper mayor Demircan said:
“what I experienced with my father during my childhood affected my whole life. The close relationship I had with my father shaped my world and formed my objectives in life. So what you tell your children when they are young, will create the meaning and objectives of their lives”.

The project, a collaboration among Beyoğlu and Esenler municipality, the Culture City Foundation and Istanbul Public Health Directorate, will run seminars, workshops, playgroups, referral and nursery services to support parents reached by the municipal social welfare services. It will build the capacity of municipal staff including nursery school teachers and social workers in topics such as child development, positive discipline and early detection of problems.

The partners of the project signed a protocol of collaboration during the launching event at Istanbul Modern Art Museum.
