New momentum for young children in Istanbul municipal government

The newly elected Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, has launched an initiative to build day care centres in 11 districts. The Mayor acknowledged the support of the Foundation and our partner Boğaziçi University in informing his plans, which aim to establish 150 new day care centres around the city. Mayor İmamoğlu made a priority during his campaign of improving life for Istanbul’s young children and their caregivers.

This is just one example of rising levels of interest in and commitment to the early years in Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Staff at the Parks and Gardens Directorate recently attended training by experts from Boğaziçi University, SUPERPOOL and Nordic Playground Institute on child development, playground safety and designing green spaces that work for young children and caregivers. Meanwhile, 70 staff from the municipality’s 18 ISADEMs (Family Support and Training Centres) have been trained by Boğaziçi University on issues such as play, nutrition and maternal mental health, as the centres prepare to expand their target age group from 3-12 to include also 0-3 year olds and their caregivers.
