Background Papers on Caregivers’ Mental Health

These two papers offer a baseline for understanding the impact of caregiver mental health on early childhood development.

Together with United for Global Mental Health, we developed two position papers to raise awareness on the importance of investing at an early stage of life and the need to focus on the impact of the parental and carer mental health on babies and toddlers.

These reports document evidence that points to the compelling need to strengthen existing research, programming and advocacy work in parental, carer and child mental health, and provide examples of past and current interventions to improve parental, carer and child mental health.

Parental and carer mental health: Impact on the child

This paper identifies current trends in parental and carer mental health and shares the best evidence, interventions and opportunities to improve caregivers’ mental health.

Parental and carer mental health in conflict and emergency settings: Impact on the child

The second paper is an annex to the above paper and explores the influence of conflict and emergency settings on wider challenges facing parents and carers, children and their mental health.
