Indicators for Child-Friendly Local Development

This publication establishes indicators to assess gaps in India’s urban policy and implementation relevant for early childhood development.

As part of the Child-Friendly Smart Cities initiative implemented by India’s National Institute of Urban Affairs, this publication provides indicators to assess the gaps relating to child development in India’s urban policy and implementation. It sets out a data typology under which various child-friendly indicators can be categorised, develops and collates indicators under this typology, and describes how the indicators could be used by cities in India.

Currently, India does not have an established model of child-friendly cities that relates urban planning and urban development to outcomes in children’s development. In light of this absence, an exhaustive list has been conceived as a starting point to develop indicators that can be used to assess the impact of urban development on children.
