Child-friendly buses in Dhaka
It can be stressful for children to travel by public bus in Dhaka. Journeys take a long time due to congested roads, and buses are often crowded, with a lack of seats; sometimes strangers invite children to sit on their laps, and child abuse is a growing problem. Pregnant women are harassed and there is no scope for nursing mothers to breastfeed.
The project will renovate selected buses, creating a dedicated zone for children, parents and pregnant women, and workshops on preventing passengers from harassing women and children will be organised for the drivers and conductors of the buses. The relevant government bodies will be approached to scale up the intervention across all the city’s buses.

Update on the project
Update, August 2018: The project has surveyed 200 people for ideas, and produced a design which includes colour-coded seats in a designated part of the bus and a foldable ramp. The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation has responded with interest and given the go-ahead for the project to pilot the design.
