Creating space for creative play in Delhi

Residents of Delhi cleared 21.5 tons of garbage from a dumping ground to create a public space where children could play and women gather for conversation – a space this high-rise residential community had previously lacked.

The project will enhance the space by installing bamboo frames for children to climb through, steel acoustic equipment for them to enjoy making sounds, and a volleyball court, walking track and gym equipment. It will generate knowledge on how to create a recreational space where children can be imaginative and creative.

Update on the project

Update, February 2018: Local children have reacted with enthusiasm, and initial figures show a 250% increase in the number of people using the park and a 60% increase in the amount of time they spend there. The challenge now is to assign responsibility for maintenance.
